Typical
Singaporean student is rapidly exposed to the sciences from the early stages of
primary school in a country where much emphasis is placed on science and
technology. Because of the hectic nature of the school schedule, many students
may not have learned the Chemistry fundamentals as they wanted, but instead
choose to memorize knowledge that they learn from the textbooks. This method
might be enough in the beginning, but as the student progresses to the advanced
level of Chemistry, they may fail and even develop a Chemistry phobia as they
find chemical equations and experiments hard to understand.
Being a
full time worker I really found it difficult when I thought to guide my kid in
the upcoming exams. I miserably failed to guide him, and naturally the result
was poor.
On the
contrary I found that if the basic principles are properly taught and
understood, then chemistry is simple. For example, the study of Redox reactions
is one of the topics Chemistry students often find it difficult early on. At
first glance, the equations may seem complicated, but before thinking about a
redox equation's reactants and products and trying to balance the equation from
there, students should have a prior basic knowledge of ions, cations, anions,
electro positivity, electronegativity, oxidation, and reduction. From then on
it's simply about following a set of predetermined steps to change the
coefficients and to balance the atoms and charges.
Then I
started doing my research on the level of education that is provided in chemistry tuition and found that in
recent years, more students and parents are beginning to realize that
professional assistance and tutoring outside of school is important to really
succeed over chemistry at both the O and A levels. Tuition centers in Singapore
are becoming common and so we have given a few tips on choosing the right
Chemistry tuition center to help people make informed decisions.
I made a
list of few things that needs to be considered you also want your kids to get
in a chemistry tuition center in
Singapore
Check the academic background and teaching experience of the tutor
We say a
student is just as good as its instructor. A good teacher can have an enormous
effect on the student's learning experience. While there are many IP level Chemistry tuition centers in
Singapore with tutors classifying themselves as trained tutors, one would
have to scrutinize the tutor's academic background and relevant teaching
experience to fully understand whether the tutor can fulfill the student's
needs for Chemistry teaching. This is because, in Singapore, their teaching
accreditations may not be unique to O and A level chemistry. In addition, most
certifications for teaching abroad do not apply to the Singapore syllabus and
are not approved by MOE.
Therefore
it would be better and useful to have a tutor who has extensive experience
teaching chemistry in O-level and A-level schools with H1, H2 and H3 Chemistry
as opposed to a new and inexperienced tutor or one who has teaching experience
but not in these subject areas.
For an
experienced teacher a good rule of thumb is that the tutor must have at least
10 years of teaching experience. As a bonus, if a teacher with a related degree
in Chemistry or a MOE scholarship is given by the IP Chemistry tuition center, it is a sure sign of MOE approved
teaching quality and techniques. These tutors have prior knowledge of examiner
guidelines and past year papers and questions which would be crucial to the
success of the students.
